South Whitley Town Utility Department staff members Kent Slater, David Mains, Dennis Eberhart and Ron Anderson installed new “old-style” street lights on the Eel River bridge last week. The lights are part of the Downtown Revitalization Project.
Cub Scout Pack 3085 received a donation of $400 from Biomet, Inc. to be applied toward a new Pine Wood Derby Track. Larry Feasby filled out the request for the money. This donation is a big step towards their goal of $1,500. Donations to date exceed $900, and include donations from local businesses, Tim Smith Construction and John Dunn’s Barbershop.
South Whitley’s Kent Theatre was recently named “Reader’s Choice” for theaters in the area from a survey by the Columbia City Post and Mail Newspaper. Larry and Libby Reynolds purchased the theatre from the Lebrun family and have been operating the theatre for 4 1/2 years. The Reynolds have maintained the historic character of the theatre while making many renovations to provide quality movie entertainment. The theatre has a wide screen and a seating capacity of 230. The seating has been refurbished to provide comfortable unobstructed view. The seats are designed for the sloped floor and represent the latest technology with cup holders.
The ticket price ($3.50) and concession prices are less than half of any surrounding and/or proposed theatre in the area.

Pierceton Elementary School has received a $5,000 grant from the Dekko Foundation to continue the Cubs Connecting with Computers program.
Cubs Connecting with Computers is an after school computer enrichment program in which third and fourth grade students have been participating. In this computer enrichment class, students have identified how to access information on the computer network and have gained a lot of knowledge. The computer enrichment class has been a great experience to further develop a partnership among students, teachers, parents, administraors and our entire school community.
The Lynch dental offices on State Street in South Whitley have recently undergone extensive renovation both inside and out. The renovation includes an all-new exterior, expansion into the adjacent space to the north, and new carpet and furnishings.
Steve Reiff, Inc. moved last week into their new office building a few miles south of South Whitley. The all-new structure is located on the former site of Coble Farm Equipment. Their formers offices were destroyed by fire last year.

The Dr. Manasseh Cutler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of North Manchester, presented the South Whitley - Cleveland Township Public Library with several books recently, in memory of a former member, Mrs. Furel R. Burns, Honorary Vice President General of the DAR.
South Whitley Elementary School recently held their spelling bee. Winners from the fourth and fifth grades were Colleen Tucker, Susan Dome, Ben Staller and Chad Eviston. In the fourth grade category, Colleen placed second and Susan placed first. In the fifth grade, Chad was first place winner and Ben was second.
Pierceton - The 10th Annual Three Rivers Conference Jr. High Wrestling Tourney was held on March 11 at Whitko High School with 9 schools participating; N. Manchester, Northfield, North Miami, Oak Hill, Pierceton, Rochester, Southwood, South Whitley and Tippecanoe Valley. Those wrestlers receiving ribbons or medals from the Pierceton Middle School were: Terry Stoddard - 2nd; Nathan DeLaCruz - 1st; Josh Gilbert - 4th; Jack Funnell - 2nd; Jimmy Pearcy - 3rd; Matt Yates - 4th; Danny Garwood - 3rd; Brent Kilbourne - 1st; Dean Adkins - 1st; Adam Robbins - 2nd; Lester Bays - 2nd; Rodney Ousley - 3rd; Shawn Castillo - 1st; Mike Whetsel - 2nd; Jeremy Wilhelm - 1st; and Tim Hall - 3rd. Coaches were Tony Phillips, Tim Smith and Billy Smith.
Whitko High School Jazz Band received a First Division Rating at the Indiana State School Music Association Jazz Contest in Fort Wayne on Saturday, March 4. The contest was held at Snider High School. Whitko played “A Little Minor Booze”, “Come In From the Rain”, and “Blue Suede Shoes”. Band director Mike Clark remarked that the soloists did “an outstanding job,” according to the judges. The three solo performers were Pat Foreman, Kevin Harter and Natalie Lude.

Pierceton - Mr. Paul Wood and Mr. Dave Diffendarfer, along with Fire Chief Merritt Hyndman, presented a program of safety and electricity last Thursday evening at the Pierceton Community Building.
The Pierceton Fire Department was the host to the Kosciusko County Fire Departments, the Sheriff’s Depts., E.M.S. and any other people interested in safety when working around electricity. Mr. Dave Diffendarfer, the Safety Co-ordinator for Whitley County R.E.M.C. and Mr. Paul Wood, Supervisor for Outside Services gave the large crowd attending a very informative and intersting presentation concerning the safety of those involved when fighting fires and rescuing those involved in accidents.

The rains of last Thursday evening caused the Goble Drain (Sugar Creek) to rise high with water and wash out the bridge on County Road 475W in southeastern Cleveland Township about 4 miles east of South Whitley. The washed-out bridge is located about 1/2 miles off of State Road 14 at 475W near the Marge and Paul Kite residence.
County highway crews were busy most of Friday refilling the washed-out area with dirt and packing it down. By mid-afternoon the bridge was again usable. These same rivers caused the Eel River to rise to flood level in the area through the South Whitley Park and along Johnson Brothers and the Wastewater Treatment Plant. No damage was reported as the level began going down before it reached the adjacent properties. Everyone had visions of a repeat of the flood two years ago, but the rains stopped and the river subsided on Friday.

The South Whitley Lions Club held its regular meeting Monday evening at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall. After the usual enjoyable dinner the members were called to order by President Russell Baker for a business meeting which took the place of the entertainment portion of the program.
It was decided to sponsor the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Egg Hunt had formerly been sponsored by the Business Men’s Association of South Whitley, but was given up this year by that organization. The Delta Theta Tau Sorority will be co-sponsor of the event. It was also decided to put on a minstrel show. This show is planned for April 24 and April 25.
The barn on the Edward Blain farm just north of Larwill was completely destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The cause of the fire is not known but is believed that sparks from a nearby brush fire might have caused the fire. Three tractors and a truck stored in the barn were saved with the exception of one tractor which was damaged when the wiring caught fire. Other small implements and numerous small articles stored in the barn as feeders, tools, etc., were lost.

The senior “Lucky Leaf” 4-H Club of Cleveland township met March 14 to elect officers. The results of the election are as follows: President, Glee Penrod; Vice-President, Patty Bayman; Secretary-Treasurer, Pollyanna Mink; Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Helen Hollman; News Reporter, Alda Jean Krudop; Song Leader, Carolyn Dickerson; and Pianist, Helen Cook. This year we have an enrollment of 49 in both Junior and Senior clubs.
Another class of aerial triggermen to guard Army Air Forces’ bombers has graduated this week from the Harlingen Army Air Field at Harlingen, Texas, aerial gunnery school of the AAF Training Command, and among the qualified “Sharpsooters of the Sky” was Sgt. Robert Richards, foster son of Mrs. Orthos E. Mink of Route 1. Along with his diploma he received a pair of Aerial Gunner’s wings and a promotion in grade at brief graduation exercises. After a brief delay in route to visit his relatives and friends, he will join an aerial combat team, unless retained at Harlingen to serve as a gunnery instructor.

Come one, come all to the hometown of the 2009 sectional 21 champions, Whitko Wildcats. Witness the hot-hand shooting of lone junior Travis Lepper, take a look at the hard-nosed sophomores Zac VanDeWater and Max Elder, experience the thrilling show of freshman Logan Irwin, as seniors Ryan Bumbaugh, Kaden Krull, and Todd Reed lead you into a night of sectional championship basketball. Hold on to your hats, folks, ‘cause here comes head coach Rob Irwin and the Whitko Wildcats!
The Whitko Wildcats brought a town to its feet with a 51-49 victory over the Lakeland Lakers in the sectional final game on Saturday night. In a barnburner, Lepper drained 6 of 9 three-balls to boost Whitko into regional competition next Saturday at noon against the Harding Hawks.
“Travis [Lepper] has been in a funk. It’s a good thing he came out of it tonight. When he gets on a roll, that is what he does. It was nice to see him do it,” coach Irwin said about his junior’s night of shooting.
The first quarter started hot for Krull as he began the game for Whitko with a quick post move for two points. A Lepper three-pointer late in the quarter gave Whitko a 6-5 lead. Another bucket inside by Krull gave Whitko an 8-5 lead late in the quarter, but a trey by Lakeland senior Tanner King tied the game at 8-8 with 2:12 left. Two free throws by Krull closed out the quarter with Whitko in front 10-8.
Whitko fell behind early in the second quarter as two quick buckets inside by Lakeland seniors King and Marcus James put them up 12-10. Whitko’s three point shooting carried them through the second quarter as Lepper netted 9 of Whitko’s first points, for the quarter, from beyond-the-arc.
“From the first one I let go I was feeling it. Coach gave me the green light and I just let it go,” Lepper said.
An Irwin 3-ball with 3:21 left in the quarter gave Whitko a 19-18 lead. Whitko began to cool off from outside, but the inside game began to warm up as the second quarter began to wind down. A bucket inside by Krull gave Whitko a 28-27 lead with seconds left in the half, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Lakers senior Nicholas Pechin put the Lakers up 30-28 at the half.
Whitko got into a scoring slump through most of the third quarter while only adding seven points to the scoreboard for the quarter. The quarter was started by a trey from Lakeland junior Kole Heller, while Lepper matched it with his fifth three-pointer of the game.
Lakeland went on a 9-3 run midway through the quarter, until Whitko began to pick up their pressure defense and caused crucial Lakeland turnovers. Whitko went on a mini 4-0 run, led by VanDeWater, to close the quarter down 41-35.
“Once we could get Zac [VanDeWater] in the middle, we were much better because he can do many things with the ball,” Irwin said.
Sparks began to fly during the fourth quarter as Whitko clawed their way back into the game. A quick inside basket by Krull and another trey by Lepper closed the gap to 41-40 with 5:20 left to play.
Lakeland held the ball for three minutes during the middle of the quarter, but Whitko regained the lead at 44-43 with 2:48 left to play when VanDeWater hit a jumper inside. However, Lakeland would not go away without a fight, as junior John Sirk nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 48-48 with 52.9 seconds left.
Two essential free throws were made by Irwin with 30 seconds remaining, giving Whitko a 50-48 lead. On the next Lakeland possession, James drove the ball to the basket and drew the foul, making one of two free throws. With the score at 50-49, Irwin matched James as he too drew the foul and missed the first of two free throws. Luckily, the freshman guard nailed his second free throw, giving Whitko a 51-49 lead with 15.2 seconds to play.
On Lakeland’s final possession, they drove the ball down the court, passed it around the three-point line, and then senior guard Joshua Avery drove to the basket. He shot the ball, watched the ball hit front rim and bounce back to him. He shot the ball again and watched the ball bounce off the rim again, and into the hands of Lepper as the buzzer sounded.
The Whitko fans let out a giant scream and coach Irwin was lifted into the air as they players and fans celebrated Whitko’s first sectional win since 2001.
“It means a lot to our seniors. When they came in as freshman this was their goal and these seniors finished it off,” Irwin said about the sectional title.
With his first sectional title at Whitko, Irwin jokingly concluded, “I think I can retire now it seems like the best time to retire.”
Whitko was led by Lepper with 20 points, Irwin with 13 points, and Krull with 12 points. The Wildcats travel to Blackford on Saturday for the first round of regional play against Harding at noon.

The Whitko Wildcats advanced in the Class #A, Sectional 21 tournament Tuesday, March 3 after defeating Columbia City, 54-49. The Wildcats play again in game 4 Friday, March 6 against West Noble.

As part of National FFA week, the Whitko FFA Chapter held its annual appreciation breakfast. Some of the FFA members serving the delicious breakfast were Adam Haegert, Mindy Salmons, Cara Ramey and Cari Sherbahn.
The annual South Whitley Elementary School Science Fair was held last week. Even though the making of a science project was not a class requirement this year, the SWES cafeteria was filled with extra-curricular projects. Under the guidance of enthusiastic volunteer parents, Todd and Rhonda Jones, the program was an outstanding success. The judges for the competition were Whitko High School students in Mr. Dyck’s chemistry class. Five winners - Emily Jones (kindergarten, Anthony Hatfield (4th grade), Cassie Jones ( 4th grade), Jordan Sims (4th grade), and Zach Jones (5th grade) will now advance to regional competition.

Jack Moore, Sprint public affairs manager, has been promoted to the position of senior public affairs manager for Indiana.
In his new position, Moore will continue to represent Sprint in issues of community and economic development throughout eastern Indiana, as well as manage Indiana’s other public affairs managers.
Moore began his career at sprint as a lineworker in 1977. From 1984 to 1990, he served as local tariff and budget administrator before being named manager-Regulatory/Industry Relations. He served in that capacity until joining Sprint’s Public Affairs department in 1996.
Moore is the recipient of two coveted Sprint corporation awards during his career: the Lamar S. Stoops customer Relations award in 1987 and the C. A. Scupin Award for Meritorious Service in 1988.
Whitko High School Senior Stephanie Warner was recently named Ag Retailer magazines first scholarship winner. This marks the first year for the maazines $1500 ag-based scholarship.
Stephanies father, Tom Warner, has been working for Farmers Elevator in South Whitley for the past 18 years as a fertilizer and crop protection salesman. His line of work has opened Stephanie up to the world of agriculture.

The 1989 Fall Festival Steering Committee met February 16 at Farmers Loan & Trust Bank and decided upon the theme for the 1989 festival - “Wheels In Motion”.
Present for the meeting were Janet Goff, Randy Cokl, Doris Rhoades, Pam Kessie, Glee Eberly, Pam Sherbahn, Bonnie Crowe and Mark Hodges.
The “Wheels In Motion” theme for the festival is to promote the car show that is to be enlarged for this year. To tie the festival together, the theme will include any mode of transportation that includes wheels.
The Pierceton Middle School hosted a 6-Way Wrestling Tournament on February 25th at Whitko High School.
Schools participating in the meet were Columiba City North, Columbia City South, Churubusco, North Miami, Pierceton and Warsaw.

Winning the Spelling Bee at Pierceton Middle School last week was Cathy Barker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Barker of Pierceton. Cathy is in the seventh grade at Pierceton Middle School.
In the elementary school, Ryan Shafer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Shafer was the winner. Ryan is a fifth grade student at Pierceton Elementary.
The Spelling Bee is sponsored each year by the Journal Gazette.
On Monday, March 12 in the band room, between 6:30 and 7 p.m. during the short business meeting, samples of the new uniforms will be modeled and displayed at the Band Boosters meeting. At 7 p.m., each factory representatives will have 20 minutes to tell why we should buy their uniforms and to answer any questions.
The uniforms committee invites you to come and see these sample uniforms as they have put many hours of hard work into this project. You will be able to express your likes and dislikes for the final decision.
Middle School Parents, your children will be wearing these uniforms for their high school years, so please attend this meeting.
All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting to see the samples.
The 150-unit goal was met by the Red Cross Bloodmobile when it was at the American Legion in Columbia City. Exactly 150 units were collected.

Mrs. Ruth Thomson entertained the members of the B.T.S. Card Club Tuesday evening. All members were present and high score was won by Bessie Blaine, and low score by Alice Bowdy.
Those present were Fern McDonald, Nellie Hathaway, Betty Hull, Betty Miller, Viola Bohnstedt, Bessie Blaine, Alice Bowdy and the hostess.
Refreshments were served and a pleasant evening was enjoyed by all.

Mrs. Ruth Thomson entertained the members of the B.T.S. Card Club Tuesday evening. All members were present and high score was won by Bessie Blaine, and low score by Alice Bowdy.
Those present were Fern McDonald, Nellie Hathaway, Betty Hull, Betty Miller, Viola Bohnstedt, Bessie Blaine, Alice Bowdy and the hostess.
Refreshments were served and a pleasant evening was enjoyed by all.
