Carol Eberly was 18 when she was handed the keys to what became Carol’s Corner. It was about 10 p.m., she recalled.
She put the key in the door and unlocked it five times that night.
“Here I am, 38 years later, using the same key and the same door,” Eberly said Monday.
“I’m just as excited about the business now as I was then.”
As usual she has plans to celebrate her business anniversary, giving away free small soft-serve ice cream cones and small pop orders, limit one per person, from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Local musician Shade Jonze will provide entertainment.
The little yellow building covered with old license plates on the corner of State and Columbia Streets in South Whitley has become a local landmark.
Carols’ Corner opened August 1, 1970. Car hops serve sandwiches with all the fixin’s and side orders drinks and desserts at the car or customers can relax under umbrellas at tables on the northeast side of the lot.
